Hand over your key or keep it?

Some car parks ask you to hand over your car key, others do not. Both approaches have their reasons – what matters is knowing in advance what to expect.

Why do they ask for the key?

In densely parked car parks, cars sometimes have to be moved. Several operators also cite fire safety: in an emergency, vehicles must be movable.

What does our data show?

Of the 27 published private car park listings, 4 confirm that you can keep your key, 5 operators state that key handover is mandatory, and for 18 there is no verified information. Where the rule is conditional (for example depending on the length of your stay), we also show “Not verified” – check the details with the operator.

If you hand over the key

  • Ask how and where keys are stored.
  • Take photos of the car’s condition at handover.
  • Do not leave valuables in the car.
  • Ask for a receipt if the operator provides one.

If you keep it

  • Keep it somewhere safe during your trip.
  • Ask what to do if you lose it.
  • Check that the car is locked before heading to the shuttle.
